What is a Magic 8 Ball?
A Magic 8 Ball is a novelty fortune-telling toy shaped like a black billiard 8 ball. Turn it over, and a short answer appears in a small window. It is made for entertainment: the answers are chosen by chance, not by knowledge of your question.

How does a Magic 8 Ball work?
Inside the physical toy, a white 20-sided die floats in about 100 millilitres of dark blue liquid. Each face carries one answer. When the ball is turned window-up, the die rises and one face presses against the window. This website recreates that experience on screen.
Is the Magic 8 Ball random and accurate?
It is random, and it cannot be accurate in the sense of predicting anything. Every one of the twenty answers is equally likely, so each shake has a 50% chance of an affirmative answer, 25% non-committal and 25% negative. Here, the draw uses your browser’s secure random number generator.
Who invented the Magic 8 Ball?
Albert C. Carter and Abe Bookman invented the Magic 8 Ball in 1946. In 1950 Brunswick Billiards commissioned a version in the shape of a black-and-white 8 ball, the look people know today. Mattel is the current manufacturer.
Is there a yes or no Magic 8 Ball?
Yes. The yes or no Magic 8 Ball removes the hazy replies and answers every question with either “Yes” or “No”, each with a 50% chance. You can switch between modes from the Modes menu in the header.
